What’s the best food for my dog?
What type of food your dog needs is dependent on many different factors including its weight, health and condition, etc.

Working dogs, e.g. gundogs and sheep dogs needs more energy and nutrition than most dogs as they have a job to do therefore they are better off on a Working dog food.

Dogs that have intolerances, allergies or other complaints may find that Pero Chicken and Rice is better for them as this is hypo-allergenic and wheat gluten free.

Can I still be over feeding my dog if he is the ‘normal’ weight?
Dogs which are overfed tend to get rid of the excess through physical activity rather than store it as fat and therefore do not become overweight. Less active dogs that are over fed tend to become overweight.

My dog is underweight, am I feeding him enough?
The best thing to do is to determine, first of all, whether the dog really is underweight. You should be able to feel the dog's ribs with only a thin covering of skin. In a short-coated dog you should not be able to see the ribs and the bones should not be prominent. Due to the fact that they are active many dogs are lean this is not a sign that they need more food.

Increasing the amount of food you feed your dog will reduce the effectiveness of digestion so the dog may not put on weight. Increased feeding may even cause health problems.

My dog is sometimes sick and has diarrhoea but isn’t ill, is it his diet?
Vomiting or diarrhoea is a way of discharging build ups of waste in the dog’s system thus helping to cleanse the system. There may well be a sub-clinical disease present.

This behaviour is typically associated with feeding low-quality pet food; changing to a better feeding regime will usually solve the problem.

Many owners find that the dog vomits in the mornings. The owner may be told to feed the dog more frequently. This is often successful in stopping the vomiting but this will not solve the problem, as it is a superficial solution.

How much food does my dog need?
Feeding guides normally found on the back of bags are only very rough guides and should only be used as a starting point. The amount will probably vary from summer to winter. The dog will probably need more food in winter in order to generate body heat.

The amount of food your dog needs and how much he wants are not always the same. You will become more aware of your dogs feeding needs and habits through experience.

Is dry food better than canned food?
What really matters in pet foods are the ingredients and their proportions. Moist foods tend to be tastier than dry but that is mainly because moist foods are more often higher in protein and fat. Dry food is more convenient and usually more economical.

Why does my dog eat grass?
When a dog wishes to vomit it will instinctively eat grass to help it discharge toxins from its system.

My dog eats what he needs and leaves the rest, am I giving him too much?
Your dog may be eating to its maximum capacity. If your dog regularly picks at his food and leaves food behind then this means that he is eating as much as he wants rather than as much as he needs. He could probably manage with a little less food each day.

How can I change my dog’s diet to help his arthritis?
The best way of treating arthritis is to tackle the cause which is the build-up of waste in the system. The best way to do this is to feed a good quality diet.  Supplementing a poor diet in order to compensate for inadequacies is definitely not the most effective way to help your dog.

My dog had dry skin, could it be his food?
Dry, flaky skin is a sign that there is an excess of waste matter in the system. It is not a sign that anything is lacking in the diet. Feeding a high quality diet in smaller amounts will enable the body to eliminate the waste matter and the skin condition will then improve.

My dog is permanently hungry – help!
The desire for food is often a conditioned one i.e. the dog has learned from past experience that if the owner is eating then the dog will be given food.

Sometimes there is no solution to this problem of feeling guilty that the dog is being deprived, however you must keep in mind that it is in the best interests of the dog not to over feed it, otherwise you could cause health problems.

The best way of dealing with this is by providing diversion and stimulation in the form of a walk or play. The more you give food on demand, the more the dog will expect it.

My dog is fussy, what do I do?
The main reason why a dog refuses food is that it is not hungry.

Some dogs will eat anything and are quite happy to devour what's put in front of them, but some will show a reluctance to eat or simply turn up their noses and refuse certain foods. This can sometimes be a sign of intolerance to certain ingredients or they may find the food difficult to digest. Dogs can also develop aversions to particular foods as they get older. Pero Gold may be the answer if your dog shows any of these signs.

Is it ok to add other things to the dog food?
This depends on the individual dog and what you want to add. We do not recommend adding other pet food to Pero complete foods.

If a health problem is present more care is needed and the diet may need to be controlled strictly.

A prepared pet food cannot be made exactly to suit every situation. It is not advisable to add things regularly to the food in order to get the dog to eat more. Over a period of time this will result in the dog eating more than it would otherwise and could undo the benefit of Pero.
